Sioux Lookout Waterfront Development
In 2008, the Municipality of Sioux Lookout commissioned a study to revitalize the business district’s image, circulation routes, and open spaces. The study resulted in prioritizing the Sioux Lookout waterfront redevelopment as one of the key pillars of the community’s Strategic Plan. In support of the project, the Municipality partnered with the federal and provincial governments to fund the design and construction of improvements to the waterfront area. Keewatin-Aski was approached to provide design services for the project.
A primary goal of this waterfront development was to ensure full accessibility throughout the site - including the beach, pavilion stage, washrooms, and open areas. Additional goals included celebrating the natural beauty of the region and respecting nature in a sustainable manner while stimulating business and tourism. The waterfront redevelopment now provides a venue for multiple regional watersport and fishing competitions, local events, and community gatherings.
Three buildings were sited at the waterfront to frame the beach and Sioux Mountain beyond: the administrative/washroom block, kayak storage, and stage.
